Self adhesive labels are laminated carrier materials and are produced from label stock materials. Labels stock materials consist of a face material, pressure sensitive adhesive & release coated liner. Self adhesive labels system are better than any other system which either require wet adhesive to be applied or to have the pre-coated adhesive activated before application. The desired properties of accuracy, convenience and versatility are easily achieved in self adhesive label system.

Self adhesive labels have wide range of applications like primary packaging labels, point of purchase labels, on cartons with a picture of the contained product and often have instructions for use, inventory and distribution center labels, mass mailing labels etc.

The designing of the label stock depends on type of printing, speed of dispensing unit, applied temperature, properties of the applied surface, texture of the surface applied on, shape of the surface, size of the label and also the service temperature. These various, variables bring about more than 200 different products.

Label stocks are made up of three basic materials; face material, pressure sensitive adhesive and release coated release liner. However, there can be six layers in a label stock.

  • Top coating is done to improve the printing characteristics.
  • Face material ( can be paper or filmic ).
  • Primer coating is done to improve the barrier properties or anchorage of adhesive to the paper.
  • Pressure sensitive adhesive layer.
  • Release liner. This is made up of base paper and silicon coating, this is done to prevent the adhesive to bond with the base paper.

Several variables affect how well a label or sticker performs: -

  • Substrate Composition – glass, plastic, cardboard, etc.
  • Shape- flat, rough, cylindrical.
  • Texture- rough, smooth, stippled.
  • Cleanliness of surface.
  • Application temperature.
  • Exposure conditions – indoor or outdoor.
  • Type of facestock.
  • Size of printed products.
